Hands of Light by Barbara Brennan
Hands of Light is the first book to teach me how to begin to feel and see energy fields. In fact, the exercise of gazing at a blue sky on a warm day is one I encourage my clients to practice. I find it not only gives them a glimpse into what is possible, but it also seems to provide them with a beginner’s meditative experience. I refer to Brennan’s amazing images often, particularly when speaking with clients. These pictures provide such a clear understanding of the human energy field even for someone not studying energy work. In this book, Brennan has successfully taken often complex scientific patterns and placed them in an easy to read and understand format. To date, I’ve read this book three times and it will become a permanent reference manual on my energy healing bookshelf. Each time I pick it up, I learn something new and wonder how I missed it the first time.

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
Like many energy practitioners, I refer to “The List” in this book often; sometimes to find affirmations for my own ailments but most frequently to look for emotional connections in patterns I find in my clients. In fact, I often write the affirmations on the back of my business cards and encourage clients to make copies to hang throughout their house in places such as on the refrigerator, the car visor and the bathroom mirror. Heal Your Life is a staple in my practice. I refer to it daily to further my understanding of client issues and for practice affirmations to further my own growth.

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
On some deep level, “A New Earth ” awoke something in me that I knew but had forgotten. I often say that spiritual growth and implementation into one’s life requires constant conscious effort. In this way, “A New Earth ” offers reminders of truths I already knew and nuggets of knowledge that relate to my Core. Near the beginning, the author asks, “Can human beings lose the density of their conditioned mind structures and become like crystals or precious stones… transparent to the light of consciousness?” I understand where’s he’s going with this question, but personally I don’t see crystals as transparent, necessarily, so much as reflective. When we do things that make us feel alive, our “aliveness” is reflected, and thus shared, to and with those around us. Today, take a cue from Eckhart Tolle and know that you do not have a life — rather, you are life.

Guilt is the Teacher, Love is the Lesson
Many of my own personal experiences have resonated strongly with Borysenko’s. As such, it was empowering for me to read about the reflexes and reactions of the person I was then from the perspective of the person I have become. Some of my thinking patterns, however, have remained the same. For instance, the author’s discussion of the differences between religion and spirituality peppered throughout the book mirror my own beliefs. This is a book I’ll not only re-read again in a few years as another measure of my growth, but I’ll whole-heartedly encourage clients to read it, as well. So many of us come from the types of co-dependent homes the author discusses and have many of the same feelings of inadequacy. I believe this book can launch in others a self-healing journey similar to the one I have been blessed to travel.

How People Heal by Diane Goldner
This book is a treasure trove of medical study recaps and specific treatment suggestions from Rosalyn Bruyere, who is prominently featured. The University of Massachusetts’ studies of chronically ill patients and the effects of meditation were very intriguing and contained much useful information Plus, the focus Goldner places on studies on intention sprinkled throughout the book is invaluable.
